Job Description

The Part-Time Assistant at the Veterans Resource Center will provide support to veterans and military-affiliated students attending Great Basin College. This position is responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the center, including customer service, program coordination, and administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will be a proactive, detail-oriented individual who is passionate about supporting veterans in their academic and personal success.

Key Responsibilities:

Veteran Student Support:
  • Assist veterans, active-duty military, and dependents with accessing resources and services available through the Veterans Resource Center.
  • Provide general information about educational benefits, counseling services, and other campus resources.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone, email, or in person and direct them to appropriate staff or services.
  • Help students navigate VA benefits processes, including submission of forms and documentation.

Administrative Support:
  • Assist with maintaining accurate records of veterans' information and documentation related to VA benefits.
  • Assist with tracking veterans' educational and benefit status, ensuring all relevant paperwork is up to date.
  • Provide support in maintaining resource materials, bulletin boards, and other displays in the center.
  • Help with data entry, filing, and maintaining spreadsheets related to veterans' services and activities.
  • Process incoming paperwork, ensuring proper handling and confidentiality.

Event and Program Support:
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and executing events and programs related to veterans, including workshops, orientations, and social events.
  • Help with outreach and recruitment efforts for the Veterans Resource Center programs and services.
  • Support coordination of veteran-specific academic workshops, peer support groups, and other community-building activities.

Customer Service:
  • Create a welcoming and supportive environment for veterans and military-affiliated students.
  • Provide referrals to on-campus resources, such as counseling services, tutoring, and career development.
  • Handle student inquiries with professionalism and compassion, demonstrating knowledge of veteran issues.

Miscellaneous Duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Veterans Resource Center Coordinator/Director, which may include assisting with special projects or tasks to improve the center's operations.
  • Assist with maintaining the center's general cleanliness and organization.


Qualifications:

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Some college coursework or prior experience in higher education, military services, or veterans' affairs preferred.

Experience:
Prior experience working with veterans or military-affiliated individuals, or experience in a customer service or administrative role preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals, including veterans, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other office software.
  • Familiarity with military culture and VA benefits systems is a plus.

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding and commitment to the unique needs of veterans and military-affiliated students.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.


Work Schedule:
This is a part-time position working up to 19.5 hours per week with a maximum of 79.5 hours per month.

Flexibility is required, with availability during evenings or weekends as needed to accommodate student schedules.

Salary:
$26.00 per hour

This is a non-benefits eligible position.
