Instructor of Radiology - Physics

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Oct 22, 2024
Deadline: Oct 22, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Department of Radiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Instructor position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise is required in the specific area of Bioengineering or related field expertise with the following technology;
1) nuclear medicine imaging, in particular, PET-CT instruments, 2) kinetic modeling methods for various applications in brain and body, 3) experience with image processing and analysis tools, e.g., PMOD, MIM, 4) experience with software modeling tools, e.g., PMOD, MATLAB, 5) experience with data acquisition, data corrections and image reconstruction methods in PET. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree.

Responsibilities may include developing a research program for quantitative image analysis focused mainly on PET imaging, but may include other imaging modalities such as Spectral CT. In addition to developing a program of independent research the successful candidate will also provide support for the broader program of research in PET imaging by collaborating with a team of investigators performing quantitative imaging for clinical and research investigations. This will include developing and evaluating methods to improve acquisition and data modeling approaches for research investigations of varied applications and radiotracers. These studies may be performed with conventional and novel research PET systems, often with dynamic imaging protocols and requiring kinetic modeling of the data derived from regional analyses of the 4D images. Responsibilities will include oversight of the Quantitative Imaging Analysis Laboratory for PET analysis, and training of new investigators in the use of the image analysis tools.

The successful applicant will have an opportunity to acquire research experience in imaging or image-guided therapy topics that will further skills in collaborative research, and the potential for independent research to be funded by a sponsored program. They will receive mentorship in grant writing and grant proposals suitable to early-stage academic investigators.

This position is designed to serve as a form of professional training to develop candidates in becoming lead independent researchers.

The overarching goal of developing a research program for quantitative image analysis in PET is to improve the quality of research imaging and to enable novel applications, while eventually increasing the clinical use of quantitative PET imaging and broadening the scientific user base of such methods that demand quantitative image metrics. To achieve this goal, the candidate will receive mentorship from the core group of researchers currently active in PET imaging. This will serve to transition the candidate to a role of leadership in this important field of medical imaging.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
