Posting Context Statement:
The Director of Marketing and Strategic Communications leads all external communication, public affairs and marketing strategy for the School of Health and Medical Professions (SHAMP). The director is responsible for shaping and delivering messaging that enhances SHAMPs reputation, promotes its academic programs, supports public policy engagement and builds relationships with stakeholders across Idaho and beyond. SHAMP is committed to improving access to high-quality healthcare training across the state. This position advises SHAMP leadership on communication strategy, supervises a communications team and serves on the schools executive team, contributing to strategic decision-making and public visibility efforts.
Position Overview:
This position directs strategic communications, marketing, public relations and external affairs for the School of Health and Medical Professions (SHAMP) at the University of Idaho. As the schools chief strategist for brand positioning and external engagement, the director leads efforts to promote SHAMPs programs, partnerships and statewide impact in alignment with university goals and the schools mission to advance rural and regional healthcare education.
A key responsibility of this role is to build and sustain external relationships- with healthcare systems, government agencies, elected officials and community partners- to elevate SHAMPs visibility and influence. The director works closely with internal teams as well as with the universitys government affairs and communications and marketing units to ensure consistent, strategic messaging across platforms and audiences.
Required Experience:
- Five years in a marketing, communications or public affairs role
- Experience in media relations, digital marketing and stakeholder engagement
- Project management experience
- Proficiency in computer applications for communication, planning and data organization
- Demonstrates working as a collaborative leader and building relationships across teams and sectors
Required Education:
- Bachelors Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Public Administration or Health Policy; four additional years (for a total of nine years) may substitute for a Bachelors Degree

Additional Preferred:
- Strategic thinking and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Promoting health-related programs or policy initiatives
- Working and communicating with elected officials, government agencies, healthcare organizations or academic institutions
- Experience in healthcare communications, including work with hospital systems, state-level advocacy, or community health partnerships, is highly preferred
- Experience engaging with state and local elected officials, especially in support of public health, medical education, or hospital priorities, is strongly preferred
- Experience fostering partnerships between academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and community stakeholders
- Success in placing earned media and managing an organizations reputation across multiple channels
- Using content management systems (CMS), customer relationship management (CRM) platforms and email marketing tools
- Budget development and oversight
- Familiarity with the structure and mission of academic health professions or medical education
