Administrative Summary:
The duties of the department chair include, but are not limited to:
  • Daily oversight of the departments activities and operations.
  • Management and oversight of departmental employees (faculty, staff, and graduate assistants), including recruitment, selection, and evaluation of both faculty and staff; ensuring all departmental employees are informed of policies and procedures related to their positions.
  • Management of department budgets to meet teaching, staffing, and faculty development needs including reviewing and approving fiscal transactions and responsibility for fiscal stewardship.
  • Responsibility for managing the departments physical facilities. This responsibility encompasses the assignment of space and the maintenance of department equipment. Chairs have ultimate responsibility for the total departments inventory and must know when equipment is loaned out or in need of repair. They also must monitor department security and maintenance. Department chairs must inform central administration of needed safety renovations or repairs. In this regard, chairs are custodians of department space and equipment.
  • Strategic enrollment management (both recruitment and retention) and including responsibility for meeting major and program enrollment targets.
  • Curriculum and program development, including delivery (scheduling, managing waitlists, course caps, course availability and regularity), and assessment to serve educational needs at both undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Assignment of teaching and other duties within the department, consistent with standard position description percentages in each responsibility area and college workload expectations.
  • Encouraging Universitys research mission by the promotion of scholarship, creative activity, and where appropriate graduate education.
  • Coordination with the College development director and the Universitys development, advancement, and alumni relations.
  • Regularly communicate with faculty about the status of department goals and actions, to include transparency about budget, curriculum, and other college or university matters of import.
  • Abide by unit and college by-laws and the faculty staff handbook in all matters, including regularly holding faculty meetings to communicate actions taken to further the units, colleges, or universitys goals and mission.
  • Promotion of the core university values of mutual respect and civility.
  • Teaching, scholarship, and outreach to be negotiated at the time of hire to meet departmental needs.
  • Future summer contracts are negotiated annually.
  • This appointment receives a 15% of base salary stipend.

Contingency Description:
This administrative appointment or the administrative portion of the faculty appointment is temporary. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event there is no longer a need for the administrative assignment, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may change this Agreement and remove the administrative salary and/or course release during the contract year and employee may return to their faculty appointment, upon 60 days written notice.
