Job Summary:

The University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating and inclusive learning and working environment. This full-time (1.0 FTE), Instructor - Cytologist, University Staff (non-classified) position is responsible for microscopic examination of cells and tissues derived from the University of Colorado Hospital based Department of Pathology Cytology Laboratory in order to detect cancer and/or other abnormalities. Results of negative Pap tests evaluated by the Instructor can be reported directly into the clinical record. Reports of reactive and abnormal Pap Test results, and all non gynecologic results are reported to the pathologist and their trainees. The Instructor will assist in the collection, preparation and processing of Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) specimens for Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) and may be asked to evaluate adequacy in the absence of a cytopathologist in some circumstances. The Instructor will join the faculty of the Department and also be an educator in our ACGME/GME accredited pathology residency program and Cytopathology Fellowship Program. More specifically the incumbent will:

Key Responsibilities:
  • 50% - Perform microscopic examination of gynecologic and nongynecologic samples for the detection of cancer and/or other abnormalities, with accuracy and in timely manner. Provides direct diagnostic interpretations on normal gynecological specimens, and indirect diagnostic interpretations on abnormal gynecological specimens and non-gynecological specimens. Will include rescreening of the work of other cytologists, as well as slides screened by digital microscopy and AI.
  • 40% - Assist with fine needle aspirate (FNA) collection and preparation. Provides FNA adequacy statement and triages FNA specimens for ancillary studies.
  • 6% - Keep accurate work records in compliance with regulatory and departmental requirements and maintains certification by completing appropriate continuing education requirements. Participates in annual proficiency testing.
  • 2 % - Evaluate technical quality of prepared specimens and performs quality control on 10% of negative prescreened gynecologic specimens.
  • 1% - Monitor/order supplies as needed and maintains staining lines and microscopes in satellite laboratories.
  • 1% - Provides training and guidance on cytologic preparations to pathology residents and cytology laboratory assistants.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
  • Master's degree in a related field and at least ten years of experience in the evaluation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens
  • Graduation from CAAHEP accredited cytology program with at least 10 years of experience in the field
  • Cytologist certification through The American Society for Clinical Pathology, CT (ASCP).
  • Current, passing proficiency testing record.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Specialist in Cytology certification through The American Society for Clinical Pathology, SCT (ASCP), at least a decade of experience
  • Extensive work experience in an academic or complex hospital environment, including some direct patient facing as well as non-patient facing work experience.
  • Experience assisting with Fine Needle Aspirations with Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) and providing specimen adequacy

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Effective communication skills in English, both in writing and orally
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, critical thinking, sound decision-making, and ability to take appropriate corrective action
  • Willingness to accommodate schedule changes in times of staffing shortages, illness, or in the setting of an emergency patient requiring assistance after hours in rare cases.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$95,000.00 to $103,000.00 @ 100% FTE

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
