Job Description:
FUNCTION & SCOPE:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of SUNY Research Foundation (SUNY RF), the Director of Data Strategy is responsible for leading and expanding Data Strategy and Governance initiatives at SUNY RF. This role will be pivotal in developing data driven strategies, ensuring the alignment of these strategies with RF SUNY operations, and guiding internal and external stakeholders through SUNY RF's data transformation efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create a Data Strategy, ensuring outstanding data quality and developing a data roadmap that aligns with SUNY RF strategic goals and objectives.
  • Drive initiatives that use advanced analytics and machine learning models to extract insights from external sources of data, SUNY campus research data, and SUNY RF Enterprise Applications data.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data is available for effective decision-making.
  • Advise executive leadership on potential data risks or noncompliance with regulations and develop short-term and long-term plans to mitigate data risks.
  • Direct the development of effective data management training across the organization that raises awareness for safeguarding data and garners support to follow SUNY RF data management procedures.
  • Design and develop Data Metrics / KPIs that will help assess data operating model maturity & progress over time. Oversee broad socialization of KPIs and incorporate improvement tactics into data roadmap.
  • Build and foster successful stakeholder relationships with Business and IT leaders by developing a clear understanding of data needs, acting as a trusted advisor, and ensuring cost effective delivery of data and information solutions to meet those needs.
  • Lead and direct the strategic, operational, governance, and tactical planning for data and information projects and business process improvement initiatives using data.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including SUNY System Admin, SUNY Campuses, and SUNYRF teams to:
    • Define data requirements, data quality rules, data policies, data standards, data procedures, and data protocols to support information needs to support SUNY Research Strategy.
    • Explore emerging technologies and methodologies to enhance data collection capabilities.
    • Identify and prioritize intelligence gaps, determine appropriate data collection actions, and drive the data collection process.
    • Develop methods to encourage end-users to adopt defined policies and procedures to use reliable, consistent, and trusted data.

Requirements:
Mandatory Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate field with a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in leadership roles or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five or more years of experience in integrating complex cross-corporate data processes, data models, designing strategic metrics and scorecards.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of data strategies.
  • Proven experience leading initiatives focused on implementing data quality management standards and processes for large enterprise organizations.
  • Ability to work across business lines at senior levels to influence and effect change to achieve common goals.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities with an understanding of statistical analytics and how data is used to enable informed decision-making and identify opportunities for better business outcomes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain digital concepts to business leads and articulate ideas and processes internally at all levels.
  • Proven record of effective leadership, including the ability to balance team and individual responsibilities; building teams and consensus; getting things done through others not directly under their supervision; and working ethically and with integrity.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Data Governance and Stewardship Professional (DGSP)
  • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP)

Compensation for this position: The compensation for this role is between $148,601 to $196,321. The pay will depend on a variety of factors that may include but are not limited to experience, education, training, and certifications.
