Posting Context Statement:
Support the functions and laboratory activities associated with research and creative scholarship in the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), including disciplines such as human nutrition and physiology, child development, human development and family studies, and textiles/apparel. Train and supervise lab personnel, undergraduate and graduate students on the use of major and minor laboratory instruments. Provide regular oversight of instrument maintenance and proper operation. Stay current with scientific literature to contribute meaningfully to lab discussions, journal clubs and group meetings. Serve on school committees as appropriate.

Position Overview:
Performs research activities and analysis; implements and evaluates research procedures and data. Records observations and measurements then reports results. Responsible for analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a certain degree of creativity and latitude. May supervise junior research personnel.
Duties may include:
  • Provide technical support in planning and/or designing of scientific projects, studies, or applications
  • Plan and conduct research and analysis of scientific data
  • Interpret test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
  • Identify and evaluating scientific samples and determining need for further testing
  • Develop recommendations and/or providing solutions, standards, and protocol to a wide range of difficult problems
  • Plan, design, develop, monitor and/or evaluate portions of a scientific project, study, or application
  • Provide scientific evaluations/assessments
  • Research, implement, standardize, and evaluate new procedures
  • Maintain detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:
  • Two years of post-bachelors research experience related to the domain of this position

Required Education:
  • Bachelors Degree in Nutrition, Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physiology, Animal Science, Dairy Science, or Veterinary Science

Required Other:
  • None

Additional Preferred:
  • Masters degree or PhD in Nutrition, Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Animal Science, or related field
  • Minimum two years experience with standard lab techniques and scientific methods
  • Skilled in molecular biology, microbiology, chromatography and nutrient analysis
  • Experience working with both human and animal research subjects
  • Knowledge of controlled experiments and basic statistical analysis
  • Proficient with computers, lab equipment and data management through to reporting and publication
  • Experience writing scientific manuscripts and delivering presentations
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to manage multiple supervisors and work independently

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to carry, lift and/or otherwise move heavy materials weighing up to 40 pounds
  • May be required to work with toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances
  • May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions
