Position Overview:
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Animal Research Facility Manager, the Animal Care Technician is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and operational abilities of the facility; maintain daily logs on all research animals; maintain inventory of supplies and equipment; assist in the daily care, husbandry care, and minor medical treatment of research animals; comply with all relevant animal research laws and regulations as well as institutional policies; communicate regularly with and provide assistance and technical instruction to staff, students, and faculty as needed.
Will be required to work Friday-Tuesday some holidays, or in the event of an emergency and/or University closure.

Required Experience:
  • Experience handling and restraining animals in a work environment.
  • Experience composing and proofreading standard business correspondences.
  • Experience and ability to keep clear and legible hand-written records.
  • Experience and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Required Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.


Required Other:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. If incumbent does not have AALAS ALAT certification at the time of hire, employment will be contingent upon achieving certification within a reasonable period, as established by supervisor.
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours which may include evenings, weekends and holidays

Additional Preferred:
  • Bachelors Degree in Animal/Veterinary Science or other related field or Certification/Licensure as a Veterinary Technician.
  • Experience working as an animal care technician in animal research.
  • Understanding of medical and laboratory terminology.
  • Experience working in Animal Biosafety and Arthropod Containment Levels 1 and 2.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to lift and/or otherwise move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear a negative pressure respirator.
  • Ability to perform required activities including: climbing and working from ladders, bending, stooping, and standing for long periods of time.
