Posting Context Statement:
The Department of Chemistry seeks a highly motivated individual to lead Chemstores operations, which serves the State-wide University research and teaching community. This position works independently, ensuring all aspects of operations are performed at the highest standards of Safety, State and Federal Guidelines, while also working closely with the Department manager, Safety and outside Vendors to provide best pricing, products and service to our University members.
Position Overview:
The position performs routine manual and moderately complex clerical and physical work in a general warehouse or stockroom. The position is the first contact for customers at the Shop Store and has a special emphasis on providing leadership and training to others and the fiscal and administrative support for the Store.
This is an essential position that may be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or university closure.
Duties may include:
- Provide customer support
- Research and procure items
- Track and organize inventory and reorder as needed
- Handle, store and transport hazardous materials
- Receive, inventory, prepare for issue, and verify condition and accuracy of goods
- Ensure timely delivery of products
- Review and verify invoices and approve payment
- Review and send billing costs to work orders and projects
- Review and reconcile purchasing card activity
- Provide support and supervision to other staff
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
- Three years performing retail or warehouse duties, including receiving, storing, inventorying, and distributing materials, and providing customer service
- Experience researching and procuring materials, supplies and equipment
- Using computer software and applications for word processing, email, and internet searches.
- Reviewing financial documents to ensure compliance with policies, laws and regulations
- Providing instruction, participating in or leading a team, or delegating duties and responsibilities to others
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent

Additional Preferred:
- Associates or Bachelors degree in Chemistry, or Biology (Bachelors degree preferred).
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with U of I computer software including Banner, FAMIS and Chrome River.
- Safety training or certification in hazardous chemicals and materials handling
- Knowledge of chemistry and/or biology
- Knowledge and understanding of state and federal rules and procedures regarding hazardous materials storage and handling
- Ability to prioritize and work independently, as well as working rapidly and accurately under pressure
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Must be able to:
- Work closely, handling sealed and open hazardous materials containers
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment to work with chemicals
- Bend, stoop, stand, kneel
- Lift and carry or otherwise move up to 80 pounds as needed
